BEN

I stare at my mate as she flies off again, her bird trying to wrangle a half-eaten snack in her beak. She landed long enough to kiss me, arm-wrestle Brown for the last berry bar, and leave. “What got into her?”

Wrinkles chuckles. “Same thing as got into the rest of us. She’s just processing it differently.”

I look at the wolf who sat me down shortly after Fallon landed in my arms, and told me just what it was going to be like to love someone who isn’t a wolf. I was young and dumb and I laughed. “It’s not just that. She’s changing. She feels different, somehow. More open. More fierce.”

A brisk pat on my arm. “You would know. You’ve got a smart wolf inside you. You’ve done very well by Fallon.”

Those are huge words of praise from a woman who always means them and rarely says them. My wolf sits down and stares, a little off-kilter.

She huffs out a laugh and ruffles my hair like I’m Stinky’s age. “I forget that you’re a little too likely to believe your own advertising. You’re a wonderful man and you need to remember that. She’s lucky to have you.”

I look up and then down. The sky and the ground are still where they usually are.

She snorts and hands me a dish towel. “Here, you finish up with these. I need to go make another kettle of tea.”

She’s brewed up at least four different kinds already, and we’ve had a steady supply of visitors filling cups and flasks and canteens. “Do you need me to make a den run?” She’s been sending them most of her tea fixings.

She shakes her head. “This will pass quickly enough. We’ll steady, soon, and we’ll be stronger for having told our newcomers.”

I lean against her solid warmth and close my eyes, trying not to think of all the ghosts who share my last name, and failing miserably. “Do you think any of them will ever come home?”

It’s the plaintive question of a small boy, but I can’t seem to take it back.

The hands that caught that small boy when he was born pat my head. “They’re already coming closer, Benjamin Dunn. Don’t you dare give up on them now.”
